BIG fish in a small pond

In a client/agency relationship is it better to be a BIG fish in a SMALL pond, or is it better to swim among fish your own size?

I was recently asked that exact question in a trade pub interview.  I’ve also been asked that question by a number of prospective clients.  Once, I had a client tell me they loved our heart, our business model, and our work, but were concerned that our “Boutique” status may limit our creativity and ability to handle the scope of the project.  Of course, as any agency owner would, I had my list of reason why I believe working with a smaller agency is the ONLY way to go.

Here are my top five reasons:

  1. Personalized Service
  2. Flexibility in Schedule
  3. Flexibility in Staffing (creative use of contractors)
  4. Lower pricing
  5. Smaller agencies can be more “specialized”

Bottom line – It’s easier to turn a speed boat than turn the Titanic.  Smaller agencies will work hard to make you feel valued as a client and to keep your business around!
