We are so happy to introduce you to a great organization, Cakes 4 a Cause, and our new friend Katie Unkle!
Katie’s older brother Ben was diagnosed with autism when he was just 6 years old. After seeing the way he was treated by others who didn’t understand his disability, Katie decided to take action.
At the age of 14, Katie founded Cakes 4 a Cause, a nonprofit dedicated to raising funds for autism research and treatment. With help from her grandmother’s recipe, Katie began selling velvet chocolate tortes to raise money for the cause, and she’s been going strong ever since. She’s added sugar cookies and t-shirts to her product line and 100% of the net proceeds are donated to support autism research, education, and the development of more effective treatments for individuals affected by autism.
Here are some facts about autism that we think you should know:
- 1 in every 110 children is autistic
- 1 child is diagnosed with autism every 20 minutes
- 1 in every 70 boys is on the autistic spectrum
- Autism is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
- There is no medical detection nor cure for autism.
