Ok, so it’s kind of corny, but we thought it would be really fun and maybe a little inspirational to highlight today, January 21, 2011, as National Hugging Day! We love to hug here at The Winn Group. We hug our spouses, we hug our co-workers, we hug our kids, and some of us (eh hem, Beth) hug The Winn Group mascot, Tilly.
According to Wikipedia, National Hugging Day started on this day in 1986 in Caro, Michigan and has since spread across the world. In fact, there is an “official” website (www.nationalhuggingday.com) that, although poorly constructed and lacking in graphic creativity, serves as a treasure trove of “hug-alicious” hugging facts. Perhaps they are a nonprofit and could benefit from our marketing and creative services? We’re always happy to serve.
Anyway, here are some of the ways the “official” hugging pros recommend you celebrate this annual jubilee:
1. Create a “hug club” (we’re not sure what that would look like, but it could be fun).
2. Dress up like a bear (now there’s an idea) and visit schools and senior citizen homes as “The Bear Hugger”.
3. Hand out “official” National Hugging Day “Hug Mugs” (we’re pretty sure this is the “must have” item of the season)
4. Carry around a sign advertising “Free Hugs!” (Be sure to ask permission first – it is a litigious society after all)
Although these suggestions might be very exciting and will no doubt score you HUGE cool points, may we recommend that you take this day to engage in a warm embrace with someone you haven’t hugged in a while?
Here is a quote from a former “huggable person” nominee, Joan Rivers, “I’m tempted to start saying, ‘Can we hug?’ instead of ‘Can we talk?'”
Maybe she’s on to something here.
Happy Hugging Day to all and to all a good hug!
