New Friends to Join .com, .net, and .org

Top-level domain names have been limited to our old friends .com, .net, and .org for some time, but now it seems they may not be the only kids on the block anymore.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the international authority over top-level domain names (TLDs), has decided to let human creativity take a stab at TLDs. Beginning in January 2012, ICANN will take applications for new TLDs.

Look forward to corporate specific TLDs like .coke or .pepsi and industry specific versions like .car, .phone, or .shoes. The sky is the limit for creativity… and price, so unless you happen to have an extra $185k laying around for the application fee (plus the annual fee of $25k), don’t expect to see your very own .whatever anytime soon.

Still, we creatives are pretty excited to see what the future holds for internet domains and hope that this is just the beginning.
